Germanic Werewolf 1512

Werewolves

The Germanic legend of the berserkers probably led to the myth of werewolves in Europe. Norse warriors would dress in the skins of the animals they hunted. They believed that wearing the coat of the wolf or bear, you inherited supernatural powers. Such a man was known as a berserker.

The term werewolf  was introduced at a later date, most likely derived from Anglo-Saxon, wer-wlkwo, meaning man wolf.

Historical documents clearly state that werewolves are created by sorcery,  usually carried out by an individual on themselves. Methods include the wearing a wolf skin belt, drinking from the footprint of the wolf, and or certain magic charms and potions. There is little mention of the bitten becoming werewolves. Documents also state that a person can change in to a werewolf and back they wish, not just at a time of the full moon.

Methods to force a werewolf to revert to human form include, removing any wolf skin belt that may be worn,  confronting the animal with a cross, calling out their human name three times or throwing an object made of iron over or at the werewolf.

A werewolf is not immortal and killing one is no different to killing any other extremely dangerous animal.
