La Gargouille

The first gargoyle was in fact a dragon by the name of La Gargouille. A fire and water breathing dragon who lived in a cave in France in the seventh century. The dragon terrorised villagers and often demanded a feast of young maidens. A local priest, who later became Saint Romonis, subdued the dragon using only a crucifix. The villagers burned the body, but tempered by fiery breath, La Gargouille's head would not burn, so the villagers placed it on the top of the church as a symbol of this priest's power over the dragon.
