Vlad Tepes
Vlad Tepes was born in 1431 and became ruler of the Romanian province of Walachia.
Vlad's father was a member of The Order of the Dragon, and became known as Dracul, which means dragon in Romanian.
When Vlad was admitted to the order he became known as Dracula, meaning son of the dragon.
Vlad ruled with horrifying brutality, often executing people by the most gruesome means imaginable. His favourite
method was impalement on a sharpened stake, which led to him also becoming known as Vlad the Impaler. During one skirmish
with Turkey, he impaled 20,000 captives, creating a scene of utter terror that became known as the "Forest of the
Impaled".
